The Greyhound guide to vacation

Rule number one for every vacation is to plan ahead. You buy tickets and book hotels early, to achieve the stressless start. Well, that’s not how we roll, at least not this time. We were toying with the road trip idea to go see Yellowstone National Park for a few months but didn’t really make any solid plans. That resulted in barely finding lodging accommodations within the park and then the government couldn’t decide if it’s going to shut down on the week of our vacation so we had to be creative. And so, we boarded the Greyhound to Salt Lake City (just in case the park will be closed) and decided to rent a car there and drive up to Yellowstone and back to Salt Lake City.

Now what we didn’t realize is that 20 hours on a dirty – and cold, as the AC was running full-speed- bus is an excruciating experience. We had some people riding the bus with us who appeared to be homeless, but they were friendly at least. My iPad with a bunch of rental movies was indispensable. But still, riding the bus gives an opportunity to see rural America. It’s like a road trip without exhausting driving. And it really paints the picture just how big this land is!

Finally, we’ve arrived to Salt Lake City. The city was founded by mormons and their presence is very much felt there: in the names of things, like Zion bank, in the giant temple in the middle of the city and so on… We visited the Temple Square, a territory where the Temple, built in 1890′s stands along with other mormon religious buildings. They won’t let anyone inside the Temple but give free tours in other buildings.

Salt Lake City used to be “dry” and only recently alcohol was allowed for the general public. This resulted in a few really good breweries where we spent our evenings.

A few days later we’ve departed in our yellow rental to the Yellowstone. It’s about 5 hours to the park but once you’re there more driving everywhere. But what you get to see is unforgettable: the amazing, colorful sulfur lakes, numerous geysers, variety of landscapes and beautiful mountains and of course animals. We’ve only seen buffalos, elk and an eagle but there are many more species like bears and wolves.

We’ve stayed in cabins while in the park and in on of them we even had to heat the room with a small iron stove. Very rustic! But every place we stayed in, had a lodge and a restaurant and the Roosevelt Lodge up in the mountains (the drive up there was awful: narrow, winding road with no barrier between you and nothingness…) had this fantastic outdoor seating where you could sit in rocking chairs and drink beer. And chat with people, like a 90 y.o grandma from New York City. Stylish and witty grandma!

On our way back from the park we made it to the Great Salt Lake, the biggest non-marine salt lake in Western hemisphere. The lake is so shallow that in order to swim in it we had to wade in the water for a good mile or so before we could reach adequate depth and start floating-that’s what swimming is like in high-salinity lake.

What else is there to say. The trip was amazing and hard to describe with words. There are some pictures already up and the video is coming.

В начале августа мы съездили в отпуск в город Солт Лэйк и в известный заповедник Йеллоустон. Ехать решили на автобусе и это заняло изнурительных 20 часов, но зато можно было увидеть как огромна Америка.

Город Солт Лэйк был основан религиозной группой-мормонами. У них там стоит старинный храм, куда правда не пускают, но зато дают походить вокруг по территории. В городе до недавнего времени даже царил сухой закон, но когда была Олимпиада несколько лет назад, закон отменили и теперь там присутствуют очень хорошие пивоварни, где мы провели намало часов.

После нескольких дней мы сняли в прокат жёлтый автомобиль и поехали в заповедник. Дорога туда немалая, 5 часов, и в самом заповеднике надо много ездить на машине. Но это быстро забывается, когда видишь нереальные красоты: разноцветные серные озёра, дымящиеся гейзеры, горы, долины, животных… Мы покрылы самые интересные места в заповеднике и останавливались на ночь в деревянных хижинах, которые в заповеднике вместо гостиниц. В одной такой хатке мы даже отапливали помещение печкой-буржуйкой! Андрюша оказывается неплохо обращается с огнём!

На пути назад в Солт Лэйк мы заехали посмотреть и окунуться в наибольший не-морской лиман в Америке. Правда, чтобы поплавать нам пришлось брести в мелкой воде довольно долго. Вода в том лимане в 6 раз соленее океана, так что единственная живность, которой эта вода по вкусу это полупрозрачные соляные креветки.

Annual trip to the lake

We followed the sun again this year to our beloved lake Roosevelt. Only this time we “camped” in the nearby motel, while our friends piled into their tents:) We haven’t stayed in that motel in 9 years. The town of Grand Coulee is in slow decay now. It’s a sad reality.

This long winter also produced quite a bit of glacial water so the lake was icy-cold. Swimming was not for the faint of  heart (aka Andrew;))

Потянулись мы за солнцем на наше излюбленное озеро Рузвельт. Только в этот раз палатку нам заменила уютная комната гостиницы:) В ней мы останавливались лет 9 назад. За это время посёлок Грэнд Кули почти вымер. Забитые досками окна пустых заведений, заростающие высокой травой боковые улицы бросались в глаза. Такова, увы, участь маленьких американских поселений.

Солнце, пляж, друзья были прекрасны, а вот с водой не повезло. Вода в озере проточная, течения идут с гор, а зима в этом году закончилась поздно, и весь лёд стаял в озеро. Так что купаться было не для слабых духом:)

Viva Las Vegas!

This is the year that marks the big three-o. Three decades Zlata managed to spend on this planet and it still spins! This called for an epic, EPIC party. And what is the better place for such a party if not Las Vegas? Especially when two of my besties were on board for some fun times.

Surprisingly enough Andrew and I have never visited Las Vegas until now. I’ve always considered it to be a fake town and there were certain real ones to see first: New York, San Francisco, Chicago… As a matter of fact Las Vegas IS fake, but it is still a good place for a celebration. It’s like a party store: everything looks shiny and glittery but it’s made of cheap plastic not blood diamonds.

Only ~2.5 hrs on the plane and out of the Seattle’s rain we enter sunny, dry desert. 90 degree weather is much welcomed if only for a few days. We were staying on “The Strip” – the hotel strip where Las Vegas happens. Hotels are big. Tall and wide. Each has its theme: Paris, New York, Italy but the unifying feature for all of them is the inevitable maze of a casino. On our first day we got lost on our way to the elevator and were wandering among blinking slot machines for the good 15 minutes.

Las Vegas is well-watered for the city in a desert. There are fountains, waterfalls and ponds everywhere you look. There are also streams of tourists in any direction. For some reason or another I thought there are going to be mostly young party people but the tourist majority were hefty midwesterners with giant drinks in souvenir glasses.

What do people do in Las Vegas besides gambling? Well, it is the city made for entertainment. There are shows to see (purchase your tickets at Half-Price tickets located in several places on the Strip) and some shows are free like fountains at Bellagio and erupting “vulcano” at Mirage; there are hotels to explore, buffets to try (caution: enormous food quantity!) and if you’re brave enough to attempt to get into the club-waiting in line for hours is normal-then dancing would be an option too. Be prepared to inhale a lot of second-hand smoke as this city allows for smoking indoors. We also went to see Cirque du Soleil “Beatles” show (not that great) and the Blue Man Group (highly recommended!)

Как-то не верится, что вот взяло и брякнуло 30. Мир не остановился, а 30 уже тут. Это событие заслуживало особого внимания и праздника, что вдохновило нас слетать наконец-то в Лас Вегас. Захватив с собой друзей Сашу, Лену и её парня Джона мы прибыли в сверкающий и тёплый Вегас.

Лас Вегас это в основном череда гостиниц, высоких и широких и каждая гостиница это свой мини-мир. Внутри вереницы ресторанов, театры и даже зоопарки встречаются (я настоящих животных имею в виду, не туристов:)). Каждая гостиница имеет свою тематику: тут тебе и Эйфелева башня и Статуя Свободы и даже сказочный замок. Но каждая гостиница имеет сходство: казино на первом этаже. Казино огромное и запутанное. В первый день мы даже заплутали по дороге к лифту и бродили между мигающих игровых автоматов добрых 15 минут.

Вообще в Америке всё огромное, а в Вегасе раза в два больше. Даже туристы, хе-хе. Ночной Вегас более интересен, так как начинается ночная жизнь, всё начинает блестеть неоновыми вывесками; гостиницы начинают показ бесплатных вечерних шоу (например в нашей взрывался искуственный вулкан, а в соседней креативно брызгали фонтаны с подсветкой и музыкой).

Из запоминающегося: празднование дня рождения в красивейшом Итальянском ресторане с видом на пруд. Нам подавали свежепривезённую Средиземноморскую рыбу и сухое вино. Танцы в клубе где стало так тесно, что мы с Сашуней танцевали на подиуме:) Тропический бассейн с водопадами в нашей гостинице.

Trip to Corvallis, OR

It’s been a while since the last update, but honestly, nothing noteworthy is happening lately. It’s just work and Internet since the rain has returned and seems to be not leaving anytime soon.

However, an event did happen recently: our trip to a small town of Corvallis, Oregon where our good friends Daniel and Michelle now reside. It was a nice, long weekend, filled with drinks, good food and great company, and a pleasant train ride. We went to the market, browsed things at consignment stores, ate local fare at nice little eateries (I had the best hamburger there) and hanged about the house with two kitties.

И опять прошло много времени с последних наших новостей, но честно сказать ничего особо интересного не происходит: всё работа, да Интернет, да и дожди вернулись в полную силу. Но вот мы съездили проведать наших друзей, которые теперь живут в соседнем штате Орегон в крохотном городишке Корваллис. В общем-то городишко приятный, студенческий, так как неподалёку расположен Орегонский Университет. Достаточно приятных ресторанчиков, магазинов, субботний рынок; есть речка, чистый воздух в наличии. Мы основную часть времени провели у друзей дома, пробуя всяческие коктейли, и поедая мясо с их гриля. Да ездили мы туда на поезде, что тоже было весьма приятно. Смотрите фото и видео.

Alderbrook Resort

Tucked in the grove of trees and overlooking the crystal waters of Hood Canal, Alderbrook Resort is nearly perfect for a romantic getaway. I say nearly, because it is children-friendly and that was the reason we were waking up way, way too early as the noise outside in the courtyard wouldn’t stop. (Consider a room with windows facing away from the courtyard–the view may not be so great but if you’re there for the rest, you’ll appreciate it. Plus, it may be cheaper too:))

But the amenities are great: nice bed and large bathtub in the room, good food at their restaurant. There is a spa, a pool, fire pits. We’ve purchased Sweetheart Cruise, a two-hour private, (meaning there were only us two and the captain and his wife) wine-and-cheese included boat ride on Hood Canal. The folks who operate the boat are lovely, they told us a lot about the area, like the farther you go down Hood Canal, houses there are mostly vacation homes, it’s so remote. And how former Microsoft employee has bought and remodeled Alderbrook Resort few years ago.

We’ve spent our days wandering the grassy surroundings, where we found one of the first waterwheels that used to generate electricity for the few houses back in 1923; danced on a pier or roamed the water with tiny crabs trying to pinch our toes. We’ve had wonderful meals at the restaurant (cooked oysters and mashed potatoes, creme brulee for dessert, yum!), and at the local deli, where they served fantastic sandwiches.

Спратанный среди зелени и расположенный на берегу залива Худ, в 2-х часах езды от Сиэтла, Альдербрук Резорт очень приятное и романтическое местечко. Мягкие кровати и большие ванны в номере, во дворе фонтанчики и водопадики, бассейн, спа, костры по вечерам, живая музыка на закате, прогулка на катере с вином и сыром. Мы проводили дни гуляя по травянистым окрестностям, где обнаружили экспонат водяной мельницы, которая в 1923 году производила электричество для немногих жилых хаток в округе; бродили по кромке воды и ловили крохотных крабиков; танцевали, сидели, расслаблялись на пирсе…

10 лет вместе!
